According to my view, the best NBA video game ever released was NBA 2K13. The developer messed things up in a big way with NBA 2K14 and NBA 2K15, both of them were a big let down as compared to NBA 2K13. The legends were downgraded, the character model faces were not up to the standard. With NBA 2K16, the development team got a little bit of redemption and the gameplay department got some much-needed improvement. In simple term, NBA 2K16 delivered on most of the fronts, a complete package that kept me on to toes and busy till I knew that NBA 2K18 was coming.
Does NBA 2K18 take the NBA video game franchise to the next level or there are many shortcomings that the development team ignored? Let's try to find the answer to such queries in our NBA 2K17 review below.
Gameplay
NBA 2K17 looks and plays absolutely stunning on the court. As compared to NBA 2K16, the controls and gameplay in NBA 2K17 feel much better. Many players complained a lot about the shooting jumpers and mechanics in NBA 2K16 and it seems like that issue has been fixed out for NBA 2K17. The other improvements that look incredible in NBA 2K17 are Rebounding and the touch passes. This game brings to the table a realistic NBA feel. When you will see the new post moves, you will definitely fall in love with it at first glance itself. Defense is the only complaint I have in the gameplay department. There seems to be some issue with the aggressive Defense as I was having guys running around me (left and right both ways). Thankfully, the help defense worked pretty well without any issues.
Graphics
The graphics in NBA 2K18 looks great but not so incredible. The development team behind the game promised some major improvements to the graphics department such as authentic lighting, and they delivered it exceptionally well. However, there are few venues that are inaccurate for example, Los Angeles and New York. If you ask me to list out few downgrades in the graphics department of NBA 2K17 then character models are going to be one of them. The skin of the character's models looks like clay and few players look too skinny. Their downgrades are very subtle and there is ever chance that you are going to miss them out, but if you are a pro NBA video game player then just taking a look at side-by-side comparison screenshot of NBA 2K14 vs NBA 2K18 will show you the slight difference in skin and proportions. Coming to the best part, NBA 2K18 has smooth animations, player's face scans, physique, and proportions. I was left completely stunned by some of the faces, 98 Rodman of the Bulls was absolutely stunning. Mark my word guys, some of the faces are incredible and will surely blow your mind away.
My Career
My Career offerings are better than the last year's iteration. You will get a more realistic feeling when it comes to Voice Action, and non-game cut scenes are smoother than NBA 2K18 . In My Career, you take objective is to take your NBA talent from the college to NBA and move up the ladder to become an NBA legend. Your journey starts with getting drafted to a random team and from there you are taken to a story. You will be literally living a journey and experience day to day life of a rookie: right from meeting (a teammate) teammates, playing pickup games with teammates, getting text messages from friends, mom, coaches and many others. In short, starting from scratch.
You need to be a bit patience because leveling up to get your attributes will take longer than expected. Also, you will not get any sorts of points/coins for playing pickup games with teammates (I need a confirmation on it, but the point I want to state here is that leveling is a long process). To get more points, you need to play the real games, and this brings a lot to the table, and altogether a different experience because you will be controlling just one player on the court and your team mate will be AI. This is one thing in NBA 2K18 that you can bank on to keep you going for the game for many months to come.
Other Improvements
Coming to crowd chants, it is better but not mind blowing. You will surely feel that the crowds are more interaction and emotion (cheers, boos, and other things) depending on the actions performed on the courts. All these things add to the immersion. Also, NBA 2K18 has 10 different commentators.
Conclusion
NBA 2K18 is definitely here to stay with a ton of improvements and additions and carry on being the best sports video game franchise. The $60 investment is going to be worth as there is enough content to keep you busy until the next year for NBA 2K19.
